Honda NS400R |
| Exhaust Systems |
The NS400R has an interesting and unique engine configuration but unfortunately, Honda didn't make the best of it. Although 130mph is good for a 387cc motor, the powerband is very short and it peaks out at 9800rpm. The fault for this lies with the exhaust system, which has been seriously compromised by the need for ground clearance under the chain side. Honda's solution was simply to shorten the pipes until they fitted, and then they attempted to get the powerband back by fitting the rather ineffective ATAC system. The best solution for this is to make pipes which cross over under the bike, thus ensuring the necessary system length, leaving only the stinger to be routed past the chain. We supply such a system in kit form for self-assembly, with supplied instructions. The ATAC system is scrapped and the new pipes are a great deal lighter than the originals, too. This kit allows the engine to 'rev out' to 11000rpm and gives top speeds over 140mph (225kph). The kit includes the complete exhaust system for the two lower cylinders including headers and stubs to fit to the cylinders in place of the ATAC, plus alloy or carbon race-type silencers. The top pipe does not suffer from the same ATAC problem as the two lower ones, so it can be retained and a matching alloy silencer and stinger is included in the kit. I always advise that fitting this kit is the first, best thing to do to an NS. Price: £395.00 + shipping and VAT, if applicable. |
| Big Bore Kit |
For those who want the ultimate in performance, we supply a big-bore kit. This takes the capacity up to 492cc and enhances the performance considerably. The extent of the performance gain is at the customer's request. Since the cylinders need re-porting after the boring anyway, we will port them to achieve what the customer wants in performance terms, anywhere from soft-road up to full-race levels. Price: £975 + shipping and VAT, if applicable. |
| Chassis Modifications |
For NS400R owners looking to improve the handling of their machines, we recommend the early CBR600 wheels as a good investment, especially if you are contemplating engine modifications. The standard rear rubber is too narrow to cope properly with the increased power of the big bore kit. Another alternative is to fit the rear 4" Comstock rim off the VT1000. Also, for those who have the inclination, we point out that the NS engine is a perfect shape to go into an RGV or RS Aprilia layout.
